What is a Reservist?
A Reservist voluntarily dedicates their time and skills to support the SAPS without expecting financial compensation. Reservists may be called upon by the National Commissioner to perform duties that strengthen and support the police force in upholding its constitutional mandate outlined in Section 205 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.

Basic Appointment Requirements
- Residency: You must be a South African citizen by birth.
- Age: Between 20 and 40 years old, with documentation to verify.
- Medical: Complete a health questionnaire at your own cost, confirmed by a registered medical practitioner.
- Evaluation: Physically, mentally, and medically fit for duty.
- Character: Of good and sound character, with positive background enquiries.
- Education: Possess at least a senior certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.
- Language Proficiency: Able to speak, read, and write at least two official languages, including English.
- Vetting Process: Undergo vetting or screening.
- Training: Willing to undergo training as determined by the National Commissioner.
- Prescribed Oath: Prepared to take the prescribed oath of office.
- Retirement Age: Understands that services may be terminated at the age of 60.
- Employment: Provide proof of employment.
- Proof of Residence: Provide proof of residential address.
- Criminal Record: No criminal record or pending criminal cases.
- Tattoos: No visible tattoos while wearing uniform, as per SAPS Dress Order.
Reservist Training Programme
Selected candidates will attend the Reservist Training Programme, which includes orientation, distance learning, contact sessions, and assessments. Training sessions may occur after hours and on weekends to accommodate work commitments. Training areas include orientation to SAPS, law, community service, crime investigation, crime prevention, and street survival. Appointment as a Reservist is contingent upon successful completion of the training programme.

Core Functions
Reservists will perform general policing duties in sectors at station level, including preventing, combating, and investigating crime; maintaining public order; protecting inhabitants and property; and upholding and enforcing the law.
How to Apply
- Complete the prescribed application form available at SAPS Recruitment offices, local Police Stations, or the SAPS website.
- Application forms are not for sale; any offers of payment will be investigated.
- Specify the station for which you are applying, preferably close to your residence.
- Sign your application form in front of a commissioner of oath.
- Attach certified copies of required documents, including ID, driver’s license, qualifications, proof of employment, and proof of residence.
- Submit two color ID photographs, one attached to the application form.
- Hand-deliver application forms to your nearest Police Station or Reservists Coordinator Office.
